Welcome to 2018~2019 School Year!
My name is Carolyn McNulty and I am entering my fifteenth year at Brighton Area Schools.
This is my second year as an Early Literacy Coach. I provide K-4 teachers with instructional support in reading as well as assist with the implementation of the Third Grade Reading Law.
I received my Early Childhood and Special Education Degree from Lesley University in Boston, Massachusetts. I received my Masters in Reading from Eastern Michigan University. I am certified as an LD Resource Room Teacher and have been trained in the F.A.S.T. program. Most of my experience has been in Early Childhood Eduction K-2 and Special Education.
At Brighton Area Schools, we believe that every student is capable of learning. Teachers and Educational Assistants provide explicit reading instruction to students throughout the school day. We dedicate an additional 30 minute layer of reading instruction during "WIN" time. "WIN" stands for What I Need. Our district use DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) as one of our universal screening tools in K-2. This year, we added NWEA as our overall screening tool K-4. Our goal is to support all students who are not meeting grade level expectations with strategic or intensive interventions. We progress monitor students every two weeks. When students meet the expectations, they return to differentiated literacy instruction in the core. The groups are fluid. We adjust groups throughout the school year based on the information we receive from assessments. At Brighton Area Schools we intervene as soon as the student experiences difficulty to help him/her get "back on track". If in the future the student requires additional support, we provide interventions again.
Progress monitoring graphs will be sent home to students in intervention groups three times per year. Parents interested in reviewing their student's progress may contact their child's classroom teacher. If you need further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
You can reach me at Spencer Elementary School M-F from 8:00-4:00. I am happy to meet with you to discuss your child's progress at any time. You can also send me an email at: [email protected].
I wish you and your child a happy, engaging, and productive school year!
Fondly,
Carolyn McNulty
